SCHOOL OF ORTHOPAEDIC CAST TECHNOLOGY NATIONAL ORTHOPAEDIC HOSPITAL,
DALA – KANO.
HISTORY OF PLASTER OF PARIS SCHOOL / SCHOOL OF ORTHOPAEDIC CAST TECHNOLOGY
Following observation of the Hospital that patients from Secondary Health Institutions and other non Orthopaedic institutions come to National Orthopaedic Hospital Dala with complications as a result of poor application of plaster of Paris, the Hospital Management decided to have a training programme in the application of Plaster of Paris on Orthopaedic surgeon’s request and guidance.
This training started as an attachment programme in 1987 and advanced to a well organized formal school of six (6) months training programme in 1992.
However, it was in 1994 that the then Orthopaedic Hospital Management Board gave approval via the letter ref. no OHMB/344/1/51 of 6th January, and gave the directives that effort should be made to up-grade the course to a Certificate Programme. The graduants would be termed Plaster Assistants.
The Board letter of 13th January 1994 ref. no OHMB/334/1/23 identified the Plaster Assistant as falling under Health Assistant cadre.
The impact of this training has been much felt with the fact that, there are fewer patients with plaster cast complications as a result of poor application received compared to what it used to be before the training programme commenced.
NATIONAL DIPLOMA PROGRAMME
Sequel to the above mentioned decision by the Hospital Management, there was a strong desire to commence a new training of Diploma status based on the following reasons:
That Orthopaedic practice has been in existence as long as the evolution of human medicine.
It has however continued to go through various modification/phases of developments, and that virtually all medical specialties have trained individuals at the community level except the Orthopaedic practice. Therefore, middle level man power development within the Orthopaedic practice is also desirable.
It was our opinion that the need for such trained personnel at the community level cannot be over emphasized.
In view of the danger posed by the traditional methods of Orthopaedic practice in this country, and fact that the few trained plaster room Assistant/Technicians on ground who had clinical attachment outside Nigeria were aging, there was a great need to replace them with locally trained ones.
With the realization of this fact and many others, it was considered imperative the training of this cadre of personnel at Diploma level; hence a curriculum was developed following contact with the National Board for Technical Education.
This Hospital has been the pivot in training of these personnel, it was with this interest and after due collaboration with National Orthopaedic Hospital Enugu, UTH Ilorin, UTH Ibadan, a critique workshop for the production of a clear curriculum for National Diploma (ND) was held in this Hospital on 5th – 9th March, 2012.
It is worthy of note that the draft copy of the said curriculum was proposed and drafted solely by this Hospital.
Following the said workshop, it was generally agreed that the name of the school be; School of Orthopaedic Cast Technology and graduates will be offered National Diploma in Orthopaedic Cast Technology. This we commenced in January, 2012.
The Hospital is presently awaiting accreditation visit by the National Board for Technical Education in September, 2013.
Presently, we have a total student population of Sixty Five (65), comprising of Thirty Four (34) students in NDII and Thirty One (31) students in NDI.
Admission forms are presently on sale for 2013/2014 Academic Session. Entry requirement is five (5) O ’level credit in GCE/SSCE/NECO which must include English Language, Mathematics, Biology/Health Science and any other two(2) credits at not more than two (2) sittings.
It is imperative once more to mention that this is the first and the only school of this nature in Northern Nigeria, second to none in West Africa and that the idea, planning and execution is the brain child of this Hospital.
This is the history of a school which started as an attachment training which graduated to certificate programme and now a National Diploma Institution.
