NURSING SERVICES DEPARTMENT
The Nursing Services Department is the organized unit of the hospital which is responsible for provision of nursing care for clients of the hospital on both out and in patient bases.
The department is headed by the Deputy Director of Nursing assisted by the four (4) coordinators.
Functions:
- The main function of the nursing services department is to provide total effective, harmless and well-coordinated nursing care to patients. This is achievable making the most use of all available resources both human and materials.
- Provision of individualized care and involvement of patient in their own care through health education.
- Provision of adequate health information to patients and family
- Conduct initial and on-going assessment of patients including care before, during and after surgeries
- Planning and implementation physiological, psychological and social cultural nursing care of patients
- Provision of counseling and advocacy services
- Motivation of staff to embrace modern trends in health care delivery through continuing education
- Provision of airway ventilator support to critically ill patients
Staff Disposition
The personnel disposition consist of both nursing and non-nursing staff.
The department has a total of 287 nurses and 178 health attendants. These available staff are responsible for providing services in18 units under the nursing services department.
The nursing staff includes the Chief nursing officers heading the units, the assistant chief nursing officers, principal nursing officers, senior nursing officers, nursing officers I and II. While the non-nursing staff are the plaster technicians, senior health attendants and health attendants.
Achievements
- The department has witness massive expansion with the opening of the Spinal complex which houses the spinal SOPD, Spine A & E and the Male and Female Spinal ward which is 45 bedded. There is also the creation of the Male ward III which is also tagged dirty cases ward.
- Early in the year 2020, all the units were supplied with new bed side chart board. Also, new modern medication trollies as well as dressing trollies.
- Each unit now has non-contact thermometer.
- The department maintains high percentage of success in nursing care of post-operative clients.
- High standard of nursing care is sustained with disciplined and responsible nursing and non-nursing staff.
In the area of professional development, the department has produced about 30 graduate nurses on the job training.
